About the Santoor
The Santoor is a hundred string instrument, a very ancient instrument from India. In the Sanskrit Languages it was called Shata Tantra Vina. The Santoor is equivalent to the Hackbrett in Germany, Cimbalom in Hungary, Yang Qin in China, Santoor in Iran, Santoori in Greece, Hammered Dulcimer in America and many other countries. The Santoor is played by two wooden sticks.
In the Indian Classical Music we play the Raag and Taal. The melody and rhythmic cycles and all the music is improvised music. We come on stage without any rehearsed items and the improvisation is devited into two parts. The first part is played without percussion instrument known as alaap and jor where we create the mood of the raag. Each raag convaisable to a mood. And after that we start the third part known as Jhala with the composition from where the percussionist ( tabla player ) joins with the melodic instrument. There are further improvisations based on the composition. The composition of a raag begins slow and ends most with high speed rhythm in the Jhala.
