Welcome Bee Seavers, the leading western exponent of Santoor, master deciple of the great Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, and the first foreigner to be decorated with the prestigious Roshan Ara Begum Award, gave a scintillating performance on the evening of May 7 at the PACC. He was accompanied on the tabla by Shabir Hussain. The absolute stillness of the audience throughout the evening was testimony to the talent of the two distinguished performers. Seavers played the evening Raga Kaunsi Kanhra. The way the two artists handled the sustained melody of the raga, easing them along with particular grace and finesse, won my instant admiration. In the concert, the audience was treated to a memorable performace. There were moments when the bell - like sounds of a single string quivered and germinated in the stillness, followed by harp - like arpeggios which filled the hall with warmth and colour. Seavers impressed everyone present with the control he exercised over his instrument. A raga can so easily sound indulgent, but Beejee Seavers and Shabir Hussain made every single moment and tiny nuance matter, as it could ever have mattered before. lt was an unforgetable evening of great music.
